Dave Phillips

Dave Phillips has been broadcasting on the wireless for almost 50 years! He started, like so many of his radio colleagues, working on hospital radio.

Dave presented a Saturday Morning Show on the radio station serving Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral. He moved into commercial radio in the nineties, working for stations in Liverpool, Wrexham, Birkenhead, Colwyn Bay, Bangor, Lancaster and Prescot before making the move to Chester’s Dee Radio in 2004, and Dee's sister-station Cheshire's Silk Radio in 2020.

For much of this time, he also managed to hold down a full-time job as a secondary school Maths teacher. As you can imagine, he didn’t sleep much during this period!

Dave presents the Sunday Daytime Show on Silk, between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm each week.

One of the most popular features in the programme is the weekly music quiz: The Sixty-Second Challenge, where two listeners go head-to-head to see who has the greater knowledge of popular music over the last fifty years. You can hear some of the previous editions of the competition here:

You can ring to register to play, by sending a Facebook message with a contact phone number.

Dave also enjoys testing his listeners’ lateral thinking skills with a weekly brainteaser: The Sunday Survey. Each week’s question is posted on our Facebook page, with clues to help solve the mystery. Here’s one of the questions from a recent edition of the show:

The most expensive car ever made was put up for sale. Although many people wanted to own it and could afford to buy it, nobody will ever do so. Why?

(You’ll find the answer at the bottom of the page.)

Dave is an avid record collector and his personal collection includes over two thousand CD’s, LP’s (remember them!), 7″ singles and cassettes. Each week, Dave finishes his show with a track from this collection and he invites listeners to guess what the song is from his musical clues.

Also in Dave's Sunday Show, in Celebrity Birthdays, he'll play a track from a singer who's celebrating their birthday on that day and, in Music from the Movies, play a song from the soundtrack of a popular film. Plus, his shows always contain a liberal helping of Phillips' Fascinating Facts!

One of his most memorable broadcasting moments was when he was presenting the Saturday Sport Show on Dee and was interrupted mid-link and arrested by a Cheshire Police Officer. He was handcuffed and driven to a Police Station in Mold, where he spent the night in a police cell. Fortunately, the whole incident had been engineered to raise money for a local charity. Listeners were asked to donate money to the charity in order to secure Dave's release from jail. To the great relief of the Programme Controller, he was released just in time to present his Sunday Show the next day! You can watch a YouTube video of the arrest here:

Now that he’s retired from the teaching profession, Dave can often be heard sitting-in for his colleagues at Silk, or joining the Promo Team and CheshireThe Cat on outside broadcasts. He also publishes all the local news stories on the Silk website:

Dave is Brand Champion for Silk's sister stations - Love 80s Liverpool and Love 80s Manchester:

When he can’t find a microphone to talk into, Dave enjoys DIY, gardening, long walks in the country and eating out at local restaurants with family and close friends.

Did you work out the answer to the Sunday Survey Question?

The car was the moon buggy, used by astronauts to explore the moon. It was left there and, although NASA would like to sell it, no one can retrieve it! (Well done if you got that right!)
