
A 16-year-old Congleton boy has been sentenced after admitting wounding another teenaged boy without intent.
The boy, who can’t be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to wounding without intent at an earlier hearing.
He appeared at Cheshire Youth Court on Monday 14 April to be sentenced and was given a 12-month referral order and a restraining order not to contact the victim.
The court heard how on the evening of Friday 17 January the boy got into an altercation with another boy in West Heath near Tesco.
At some point the 15-year-old victim was stabbed in the back causing a serious injury which needed hospital treatment.
Despite best efforts the knife was never recovered. The defendant denied stabbing him but the wound left no doubt that it had been caused by a knife.
DS Tom Binder said:
“Thankfully, while the injury was serious, it was not life threatening and the victim is making a good recovery.
“Teenagers inflicting serious injuries with dangerous weapons is not something we’re used to hearing about in Congleton and this level of violence has shocked the community.
“We already educate young people about the dangers of knife crime, but after this, we also enlisted an external company to deliver knife crime prevention education to every pupil supported by neighbourhood police officers.
“We will continue to work with our schools to ensure this type of dangerous behaviour remains a rarity for Congleton.”
