Council encourages older residents to take a stand against falls

Falls Awareness Week, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of falls among older adults, is taking place from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd September.

Cheshire East Council and the NHS is urging residents, especially those aged 65 and over to take proactive steps to reduce their risk of falls and maintain their independence.

Falls can have significant consequences for older individuals, leading to injuries, loss of confidence, and even a decline in overall health. However, with the right precautions, the risk of falls can be significantly reduced.

Key steps to help prevent falls:

  • Engage in activities that improve balance, strength, and flexibility. Consider joining a local exercise class or walking group.
  • Identify potential hazards in and around your home, such as loose rugs, cluttered pathways, and poor lighting. Make necessary adjustments to improve your living environment.
  • Discuss any medications you are taking with your healthcare provider. Certain medications can cause dizziness or balance problems.
  • Ensure your vision is up to date. Regular eye tests can help identify and address any vision issues that may contribute to falls.
  • A balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support bone health and overall well-being.
  • Dehydration can lead to dizziness and falls. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • If you are concerned about your risk of falls, talk to your healthcare provider or a falls prevention specialist.

Cheshire East Council is committed to promoting the well-being of older residents and providing resources to help them live independently. By following these simple steps, older adults can take control of their safety and enjoy a more active and fulfilling life.

Councillor Jill Rhodes, chair of the council’s adults and health committee, said:

“Falls Prevention Week is a vital reminder that every step we take towards a safer environment for our older residents is a step in the right direction. 

“By working together, we can support communities where everyone feels secure and can enjoy a fulfilling life."

NHS falls specialist leads and One You Cheshire East will also be holding drop-in sessions at the following venues, involving falls screenings, blood pressure checks and mobility aid checks:

Friday 20 September:

Green on The Corner, Hurdsfield, Macclesfield SK10 2RJ from 10am to 12 noon. 

Willowmere in Middlewich CW10 9PY at 3pm.

Friday 27 September:

Green on The Corner, Hurdsfield, Macclesfield SK10 2RJ from 10am to 12 noon.

In a joint collaboration between the council, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, a new ‘Steady on Your Feet’ website has been launched. The website is for the public and professionals and provides information and advice on falls and includes the option for people to complete a self-assessment to help reduce their risk of falling. 

One useful action is to join free Stand Strong classes which are offered by the One You Cheshire East service for people aged 65 and over to help improve balance and mobility and reduce the risk of falling. These are offered in a variety of locations across borough. The One You Cheshire East was set up to help residents to live a healthy lifestyle including to get fit.
